Off to the Races!

This weekend saw MCC's second foray into the trail-racing circuit, with nearly 100 runners and walkers turning out for our annual MCC Fitness Trail 5K winding along the trails behind our Bedford campus.
Thanks to an overnight downpour, the trails were a bit muddier this year, something that hardy trailrunners eagerly enjoy. Proceeds from the race benefit the MCC Foundation, which among other things, helps support student scholarships.
While the majority of participants this year hailed from outside the college, this year's men and women winners were both MCC folks, with math adjunct professor Michael Gilmore claiming first place overall with a winning time of 19:19 (tying last year's winning time), and grant writer Lisa Doucett defended her title with a winning time on the women's side of 23:15, beating her last year's time by 19 seconds!

An amazing amount of students, faculty, staff, and family members volunteered this year to help folks navigate the trails and the campus, as well as handling a ton of other behind the scenes to make the day a huge success. A fun run for small children around the Bedford quad was a huge hit, with dozens of adults cheering them on from the sidelines. Music was supplied by contra dance band Roaring Jelly http://roaringjelly.org/.
With thanks to Alyce O'Connell on the photos (http://alyceoconnell.com/) here's a photo gallery of some of the day's excitement. Congrats to all who participated!

big thank yous to the 5K Fitness Trail planning committee who pulled together all the loose strands under the direction of running raconteur Jonathan Crockett. Thanks also to our Facilities department for helping out with race day set-up.
See you all on Saturday, October 6th, 2012 for our third MCC Fitness Trail 5K Challenge! Save the date now and in the meantime, keep on running and walking!
