MCC Day of Service

This past Friday morning, more than 1,000 members of the MCC community - students, faculty, staff, everyone - set off for the college's first-ever Day of Service.

After raucous pep rallies inside the Double Tree Hotel in Lowell and the Bedford Campus Center, the troops embarked on their assignments.  The Day is intended to link MCC to its communities even more closely, by strengthening partnerships with schools, business and service organizations to provide leadership in economic and community development and to help foster a culture of civic engagment.  The Day of Service provides a common experience that actualizes the commitment to service, a core value of MCC, while helping to meet the needs of organizations and individuals in MCC's service area.  Many of the non-profit organizations who received MCC volunteers depend on any support they can get so while individually, the team assignments may seem like a small contribution, combined, the overall impact was significant.

Over 1,000 volunteers from MCC fanned out to 50 sites in 14 cities and towns to do some volunteer work, equal to about $60,000 worth of services to our communities.   Here's a look at some of the scenes from the day, with lots of additional photos and a bunch of comments from participants!

What an incredible day!  Great weather, enthusiastic participants and a host of service projects completed in our community.  Here are just a few quotes from students, faculty and staff who answered the question "How were you the change today"?

"I helped make a difference for young girls who wanted to improve their lives, self esteem and future."

"I was the change by giving back to the community and being part of a positive and welcoming environment".

"I made the community look better".

"I recorded the hisotry of this event by taking photographs at two sites".

Thanks to all - MCC was truly the change today!

Wonderful and exciting day!  The students were excellent to work beside and seemed to really enjoy giving back to their community.  We had 45 poeple at Cawley Stadium cleaning up the grounds, and it looks great!  Feels good to give back.

It was a fantastic day!  We had 45 people cleaning up Cawley Stadium in Lowell, and after a few short hours it looked great.  The students were amazing, and they had a great time giving back to their community.

It was an extraordinary experience to be involoved with such an energetic group of students, faculty, staff and administrators, from the time we boarded the buses on the Bedford Campus for the Soneham Boys & Girls Club yesterday morning, until we got back to the campus upon completion of our Day of Service.

From the time we arrived at the Boys & Girls Club, everyone worked tirelessly until the projects were completed.  Not only were there signs of  connectedness throughout the day among those participating, but there were also wonderful conversations that ranged from the project that each group was involved with at the site, to how much they truly wanted to be part of this day and what it meant to them to be part of the MCC community.

I believe that it changed us all in ways that did not end with the end of the Day of Service.

What an amazing day! I was up in Lowell working with a terrific team of students and staff. The positive energy of everyone working shoulder to shoulder was palpable. It was all about connecting to create positive change: student to student, faculty and staff to students and each other, administrators to students. The college community pulled together and increased the connections of MCC to its community.  Smiles abounded - the city sparkled. Many thanks to all who made this happen!

The MCC Day of Service was an experience that I’m proud to have been a part of. It’s a day of community service that not only helped those in our surrounding neighborhoods, but also brought us together as a school. As corny as it had once sounded to me, staff, faculty, and students alike truly did work side by side as equals with out social stereotypes. We honestly had changed the world that day, one random act of kindness at a time.

I was so impressed by the interaction among all participants throughout the day. We shed our labels that day - we didn't focus on who the administrators were, the faculty, the students....instead we were all MCC community members coming together for good causes. There were student supervisors in my group giving us direction and keeping us on task throughout the morning - this was great!  Even during lunch, I found we were all scattered throughout the cafe, sitting with people other than those to whom we tend to migrate towards on other professional days or college events. It was an outstanding day. I met some great students and a faculty member whom I've never met before. Congratulations to the organizers of this wonderful event!

I thought the event was great!  I had three students and we painted an apartment for a family shelter.  It was nice to help the community.  We felt proud of ourselves when we saw the finished product and the Contact person was very grateful!  They would like us to come back.  They said they are inundated in the Fall Season with people who want to help, however people don't necessarily offer as much help in the Spring and Summer months. Something to take into consideration.

The slide show and music was very rewarding to watch as we ate lunch!! Kudos to the planning committee!  I hope we have another day of service next year!!

This project was such a wonderful experience for all at MCC.  Every person was a "TEAM" player who worked extremely hard to bring every detail together and it all worked. I enjoyed seeing the students excitedly get off the busses and watching the students bond as they did the Habitat for Humanity mailing - laughing and enjoying the day was so inspiring.  I can't imagine anyone that didn't leave that day without a great feeling of pride.

This was a wonderful event that really connected faculty, staff and students. It was a pleasure to work as a site leader for this special event.  I had a great group of students who created a back drop (skyline) for 'cardboard city' an event where UML and MCC students slept in cardboard boxes on Friday night to raise awareness of homelessness. I commend all the efforts and long hours the Day of Service team devoted to make this day possible. It should be an annual event!

I was so impressed with all the  students involved in this wonderful celebration of "Community". I loved how students, faculty and staff found ways to connect with each other, respected one another, and showed a true commitment to their environment, community, and society as a whole. We are truely a family. And you are all fantastically inspirational!!

As my 9 year old nephew would say, "It was totally AWESOME man"!!

This experience was immensely powerful for my students and I.  We were fortunate to have spent our time at the Seven Hills Pediatric Center in Groton, working with adults and children having severe medical and cognitive needs.  Most of my students (from Introduction to Psychology) had never worked with this population and had few expectations.  Nothing has made me feel closer to my students than this experience.  To witness the transformation which took place in a relatively brief time for the residents as well as students was inspiring!

In the words of one student, "Never again will I take anything for granted."  We have much to be proud of!  Thanks to all for making this happen.
