MCC Math Profs Get Engaged (And Published)

A huge shoutout to four of MCC's own who have just been published in the Journal for Civic Commitment for their report on MCC's civic engagement with the Lowell National Historical Park and Minute Man National Historical Park!

Blog-sized kudos to Dora Ottariano and Beth Fraser, MCC Math Professors, and Linda Dart-Kathios and Michael Williamson, Assistant Professors of Mathematics at MCC.

In their paper, the four outlined the Lowell Civic Collaborative, which was designed to create civic engagement opportunities for students, and to give them the chance to raise their awareness about various aspects of their communities.  The article details great partnerships with the two national parks and talks about MCC using intellectual and emotional energy to help each of the park services reach their goals for 21st century.

It has been my honor and pleasure to work with several of the faculty, students, and staff from Middlesex Community College over the past two years on the Lowell Civic Collaborative project. I too have become engaged in this collaboration - from connecting with students in class or working on service learning projects.

The projects these students have completed have made a measurable impact on our park operations.  For example, the streamflow report created by the Precalculus class helped us determine the best time of year to offer boat tours this summer - and their data analysis was correct!

Congratulations to Dora, Mike, Beth, and Linda - I truly respect the work you do at MCC and hope we have a long "engagement!"
