MCC Hosts Greater Lowell Rail Safety Symposium

Thousands of people depend on the commuter rail lines to get to and from Boston every day.  Thousands of freight cars pass through the Merrimack Valley region daily, playing a vital role in keeping our economy running smoothly.  The railroads are a key part of our existence and of the nation's infrastructure.

But how safe are they?

Following the 9/11 attacks and the transit bombings in Madrid and London, concerns have been raised about the safety of passenger rail service in the U.S.  Freight safety is also an issue, as witnessed by two accidental spills from rail cars in the Lowell area over the past few years.

On Tuesday afternoon, August 21, 2007 the MCC Program on Homeland Security, in partnership with the City of Lowell, presents the first public, multi-agency symposium convened to examine these important issues.

Join us in the City Campus Cafeteria at 33 Kearney Square, to hear experts from federal, state and local agencies explain such issues as:

-         Federal regulation of railroads and the role of the Federal Railroad Administration;

-         The role of the Transportation Security Administration in rail security;

-         Community concerns about hazardous materials carried in rail cars;

-         State and municipal authority over rail safety issues;

-         The role of regional transit authorities like the LRTA.

The event is open – all are welcome to attend.  The event runs from 12:30 p.m. to 3:45 p.m.

Hope to see you there!
