Pfc. John Francis Landry Jr. - RIP

The City of Lowell experienced the death of its first resident in the Iraq conflict, ironically enough on the four-year anniversary of the beginning of the war.

John Francis Landry Jr., a 20-year-old Army rifleman, died on patrol in Baghdad on St. Patrick's Day.  He served with the 2nd Battalion, 12th Cavalry Regiment, in the 4th Brigade Combat Team of the 1st Cavalry Division, based at Fort Hood, Texas.

Landry graduated from Lowell Catholic High School in June of 2005, and joined the Army three months later.

Lowell Mayor William Martin called Landry "a true hero who gave his life for his country."

'Little' was my first cousin (that's what we called him), we were 9 months apart from each other and I have to say this was what he always wanted to do since I can remember. He was the kindest cousin possible and the sweetest man ever. He will be missed by my family and all those who cared. He is one of the bravest men to have lived. I love you little
