Lowell: Where Elephants Weep

East meets West in a new contemporary Cambodian Opera, and MCC is helping to make it happen!

For three days in April, Where Elephants Weep will be performed at the Cyrus W. Irish Theatre in Lowell High School, 50 Father Morissette Bouelvard, Lowell.  The opera is a unique concert that fuses traditional Cambodian music with rock and rap, sung in both English and Khmer.   Where Elephants Weep tells the story of Sam, a refugee from the Khmer Rouge genocide, who leaves America and returns to his homeland, Cambodia.  Committed to finding his roots in his native culture, he unexpectedly falls in love with a rock star.  The musical score, which draws on classical western, ancient Cambodian and popular American music traditions, is set against the backdrop of a beautiful landscape torn by war and terror.

The opera came about because of a unique, multi-faceted collaboration involving MCC and more than a dozen other city agencies.  Kudos go out to the MCC personnel who helped pull everything together!

The opera will be performed on Friday, April 27 at 7 p.m., on Saturday, April 28 at 8 p.m. and on Sunday, April 29 at 2 p.m.

Tickets for the event are $20 apiece, or $10 for students, seniors, or groups of 10+.  The tickets are available at the Lowell Memorial Auditorium on East Merrimack Street, or on-line at www.ticketmaster.com
