Every Step You Take, We'll Be Counting You!
Over the next couple of months, expect to see more and more MCC staff and faculty members meandering around downtown Lowell, because right now, every step counts!
On Thursday, March 1st, the College kicked off March Into May, its employee walking program which is designed to encourage participants to increase their physical activity each day by taking more steps. The program was launched at the College's City Campus and will be replicated soon at its Bedford campus.
Everyone who enrolled in the program was given a free pedometer to keep track of the number of steps and the distance he/she travels on a daily basis. Participants are eligible to receive incentive prizes such as a free six-month membership to the UMass Lowell Recreation Center, or gift certificates to a local fitness store.
More than 125 would-be walkers have enrolled in the program, and already, several of them are off and walking. Walking groups are being formed, and so far, four different routes have been mapped out throughout the downtown, ranging in distances.
Keep an eye on MCC folks like Christine Martin-Roque, Terry Martineau and Ann Montminy to be out front as leaders of the pack. But don't count out President Cowan, either. She was in Washington D.C. the day the program started, but she had her pedometer logging her steps between meetings, so she could be a dark horse surprise in this race!
How are you keeping pace with the fitness wave?
