There's No Day Like a Snow Day!

Okay, okay, depending on where you live, yesterday's Valentine's surprise might have been more like an ice day, or a really windy, sleety day.  Or if you live toward the Boston area, just an all-around wet day.

But National Weather Services registered 8 inches of the white stuff for Lowell and Bedford, only half of which was on the ground when school was cancelled for the day early yesterday morning.

Today's thaw-out resulted in very few cancellations south of the New Hampshire border and a whole slew of start delays, including here at MCC which saw a two-hour start delay.

Which brings us to our question for today:  how do you get your news to find out if school is cancelled, closed or delayed in the event of rough weather?  Do you watch for an announcement on TV news?  If so, what channel do you watch to get the news from?  What time do you check for the announcement?  How about the radio?  Does anyone still use radio stations to find out about cancellations?  And in today's tech world, how many of you use the internet to find out if you get to crawl back under the covers?  If so, which sites are you visiting for the news?  Anyone use the MCC website?

Let us know, because we want to make sure we're getting you the news you need when you need it.  None of this info, however, will get out of shoveling the stuff.

Does anybody still rely radio for cancellations?  Absolutely!  I am a big fan of AM radio for late breaking news, including storm cancellations. I rely on WBZ Radio AM 1030, as my primary source.

Yesterday I also checked the MCC website a couple of times, and found it helpful.  Especially nice is the addition to the headlines of the times when each new notice is being posted.  Thanks to Darrow and Co. at IT for that improvement.

I watched Channel 4 WBZ yesterday morning and flipped between that and Channel 5 and 7, didn't really believe it was true until I saw it on all the channels!  I was afraid if I listened to the radio I would fall asleep again and miss it.

I never use the radio or TV to find out about inclement weather cancellations for Middlesex. I either call the main number to hear the main greeting (978-656-3200 or 781-280-3200) or go to the website to see the posting.

I automatically call the college's main number to hear the greeting.  Although this morning, since I didn't anticipate a cancellation, I didn't call the college but happened to hear about the delay on WBZ radio.

I make my husband watch the local school closing on the town access cable channel,( for our kids) you don't have to wait for all the other towns to scroll through. Then he has to watch WBZ Channel 4 news and wake me up to tell me if I can go back to sleep.  Then he went to the Gym while the rest of us sleep in!

How do I find out about a snow day?

I use the canine snow day assessment method. First I look out the window and create the preliminary visual assessment. Then I open the door for the dog to escape and do her business. If the dog does not want to go out side first thing in the morning because of the weather, this is a snow day in the making. If she goes outside, then the kids better get ready to make the bus and I have to hit the shower. Sure as the ground hog can predict spring, a chocolate lab can predict a day at home with the kiddies. Just to be sure that my dog Molly is not pulling a fast one on me, I also check every station, web site and call MCC just to be sure.

I normally woke up around 6 to check it from TV station I think it's on channel 7. Since I'm a skeptic, I checked it online again at MCC website and called the MCC main number (just in case). I just want to make sure that I can crawl back to sleep without any disturbance for the next 10 hours!!

I'm so glad we didn't have school yesterday!!

At 6:00am, I turn on channel 5, and wait anxiously while the school closing listing scrolls past Acton...Andover... Billerica... Chelmsford... Littleton... Lowell...then my children distract me for an instant and... I missed it! Tyngsboro... Westford...Woburn...Acton...Andover...Billerica...Chelmsford....Littleton...Lowell...a commercial break!  So, I give up, call Dog Lover and check the MCC site.

I like to watch the TV news and read all of the closings.  It's like Christmas waiting for my gift.

I love the Class Cancellation feature on the website, and I also love this blog!  But for early morning storm cancellations, I put AM1030 on my bedside radio and/or use the remote to turn on the TV to Ch. 4,5, or 7 to watch the cancellations.  I don't want to get out of bed if I don't have to, and my computer is not at my bedside (let's hope I never move it there, either!) so I don't use the internet as my cancellation news source.

I turned to the Internet Tuesday night (WBZ's page) for information on our school district and wasn't disappointed when the cancellation was posted at 9:30pm! For MCC's cancellations I called 1-800-818-3434 to listen to the message.

I call the school for school cancelations and sometimes I watch the news. The news channels that I watch is Channel 5 news. I mostly rely on calling the school instead due to an misunderstanding last year from watching the news.

One thing that many students - and staff - find confusing is the "2 hour delay".  If  your day starts at 7:30 does that mean you should be here at 9:30?  I think it would be helpful to just state an opening time for the school.  Many staff and students have non-standard starts to their day

Linda,

You're right, it would be better if we could give the exact time the college was to open.  Unfortunately, the radio and TV stations give us the options as to what they will report, and their choices do not include "opening at 10 a.m."  They let us choose among the following options:  One hour delay; 90 minute delay; or two hour delay for delayed openings.

We have, as a college community, agreed that a two hour delay would translate to opening at 10 a.m.  Students who have classes beginning at 10 a.m. or later should report for those classes. Students in classes earlier need not report.

I hope this helps for the future.

I love it when I don't have school and my children do.  I go around in the morning doing my touch down dance singing "I don't have school, I don't have school ha ha"."  This is when it is my turn to bug the kids. I gotta have my fun some how.

I am part of the dental hygiene program and on Wednesdays I have clinic at 8am so I have to know by 6am or earlier, if school is cancelled.  I rely on both Ch 5, and our own website for the info.
