Teach Science the Way You Do Science

The following article from the Howard Hughes Medical Institute website focuses on efforts to change the traditional way that science has been taught to undergraduates.  Reformers suggest that faculty move away from "lectures and cookbook labs in which the results are already known," and use active learning strategies which engage students in discovery and scientific process.  The guidelines for this new approach were outlined in a policy forum article published in the April 23, 2004, issue of the journal Science.

The article also made mention of the importance of training scientists to teach by introducing "them to the education literature to encourage them to become scientific teachers who demand data to make educational choices.”   In addition, it was recommended that the the reward system at colleges change "to reflect the importance of good teaching."
