The Northern Essex Community College SoTL Group would like to invite our COPPER group members to participate in a fresh discussion of their SoTL research and to solicit comments, ideas, and help from other members of our cluster. We feel that we all have lost the connection recently with our other COPPER members and would like to take this opportunity to reconnect.

You can respond to this posting by simply describing your project.

You could, in addition, ask other members of the SoTL group for feedback or help with your project.

Rick, I think this is a fascinating idea - as well as authentic research in which students could be active participants.  I have already done a learning styles inventory with my class this semester, but I'm assuming your inventory isn't terribly lengthy - and so I would be happy to join you in this endeavor.  Would it be alright with you if we didn't use it immediately, as long as you received the data by the end of the semester, along with student grades?  Also, do you have a student consent form you'd be willing to share?

Does student participation in online discussions structured to develop critically reflective thinking cause them to deepen, expand, or even change their thinking on the topic beyond their initial understanding?  

And a second question that I have added to this project, as a result of a thoughtful question/comment by my colleague Jan Arabas, is this:

Can a well-structured, Socratic classroom discussion that is perceived by students as having the same value to their course grade as an online discussion similarly cause them to deepen, expand, or even change their thinking on the topic beyond their initial understanding?  

Is it less about the environment in which a discussion takes place – online or in the classroom – and more about the structure, resultant quality, and student-perceived value of that discussion that improves students’ critical reflection and resultant understanding of a topic?
