Enhancing Student Interaction with Online Discussion Boards
Mónica Torregrosa of HCC has forwarded the following request for ideas regarding the use of online discussion boards to support student interaction: I have been developing a website for my Intermediate Spanish course using WebCt. Besides posting documents of use to my students, I have required them to post answers to weekly discussion questions. My goal is to increase their fluency in Spanish by providing a way to communicate and use the language outside of class. Sometimes oral class discussions are based on the same topics on which they have posted answers. I would like to communicate with other faculty using WebCt to find out how they use the bulletin board. I am looking for a way to enhance this feature and encourage students to respond to each other. I use Blackboard but I imagine the threaded discussion tool is similar.  I've found that faculty vary in how they attempt to encourage student participation.  Some require students to not only post to a discussion but also reply to at least two other student messages.

I've also tried to include activities on the site that will encourage students to login regularly.  If there is some interesting, enjoyable, or compelling reason to visit the site in addition to fulfilling requirements, the activity level can increase.

For example, in an online critical thinking class I posted "lateral thinking" puzzles for the students to solve.  They loved them, and some students would visit the site a few times daily to check on the puzzle and attempt to solve it.  Once they were logged on to our course site they seemed more likely to participate in the other ongoing discussions as well.
